Burning coal is one of the dirtiest ways of generating energy. In the U.S., over 70 percent of the carbon dioxide emissions from power plants are caused by burning coal, according to the Energy Information Administration.
The Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal campaign is working to change that. So far, they’ve shut down 246 coal plants since 2010.
But there are still many more coal plants polluting the air and water. Not only are these plants bad for climate change, but they’re also bad for local health, contributing to problems like asthma and heart attacks. America Ferrera learned in “The Coal Wars” that it can take a community years to fight a coal plant successfully.
