India has just broken its own record for number of trees planted in a 12 hour period. More than 66 million trees were planted by volunteers in accordance with India’s pledge to combat climate change. Under the Paris Agreement, India has committed to planting five million hectares before 2030 🌳
While they are awaiting confirmation from Guinness World Records, Sunday’s event was a “historic day,” as described by the state’s chief minister, Shivraj Singh Chouhan. Over 20 types of trees were placed by residents, including children and the elderly, across 24 districts of the Narmada river basin.
It’s not uncommon for mass tree plantings to be a group activity in India. In the village of Rajasthan, 111 trees are planted when a girl is born. This celebration of a female child breaks the traditional value assigned to the birth of boys over girls, creating a positive impact on society and the environment.
